 [From Andersen’s shears, A fairy tale quick appears!] 

Hans Christian Andersen is world-renowned as a writer, but his vivid and fascinating imagination was not confined merely to his writings. He took great pleasure in creating elaborate paper cuts, which he cut throughout his life. He called his paper cuts "fairy tales" and regarded them closely linked to the art of poetry – “To cut is the first beginning of Poetry” he would say. The art of paper cutting spread to drawings, collages and elaborate picture books. As a child Andersen dreamt of China – the mysterious Empire in the East. China was admired as high-culture, and the young Andersen had been told that China was situated straight under the river of Odense. The young boy, fantasizing of a life on stage, dreamt that a Chinese prince would dig himself straight through the earth, hear him sing and bring him to the great kingdom, where he would become rich and famous. Andersen’s phantasy and creativity have fascinated, inspired and given joy to young and old, high and low. It has inspired hundreds of artists and designers all over the world. The Hans Christian Andersen House in Odense, Denmark is home to the world's largest collection of Andersen's books, manuscripts, visual art, and personal belongings. We take great pride in the fact that his stories and art continue to inspire new creative works, particularly in China—a country and culture that captivated and inspired him.

众所周知，汉斯·克里斯蒂安·安徒生是一位举世闻名的作家。但是，他生动而迷人的想象力并不仅限于自己的著作。安徒生非常热衷于创作精美的剪纸艺术作品，倾注一生而投入其中。他认为自己的剪纸也是一种“童话故事”，说它们与诗歌艺术密切相关——“诗歌的首句就是裁剪”，他说。安徒生的剪纸艺术也扩展到了绘画、拼贴和一些精心制作的绘本里。 自从孩提时代，安徒生就对中国——这个东方的神秘古国心向往之。中国被推崇为高雅文化的代表，小安徒生甚至曾被告知，说中国就在自己的家乡欧登塞河底的另一端。于是，这个小男孩幻想着有一天，一位中国的王子将从地底下将他直接挖过去，把他带到那个伟大的国度，到舞台上去歌唱并拥有自己的生活，闻名遐迩。 安徒生的幻想和创造力使得全世界都为之着迷，老少咸宜并从中获取无限欢乐。数世纪以来，他也启发了无数的艺术家和设计师，并创作出各种优秀的作品。 位于丹麦欧登塞的“安徒生之家”是世界上最大的安徒生书籍、手稿、视觉艺术和私人物品的收藏机构。让我们感到无比自豪的是，安徒生的故事和艺术正在全世界范围内持续激励着创新的作品，尤其在中国——这个令他着迷并受到启迪的国家和文化。
